Karapitaya Hospital

Back

Karapitaya is in Galle, but services people from Unawatuna. It was the hospital which cared for some of the holiday-makers after the tsunami and as the destination of the first air lift from Unawatuna on 27th December.

Dr Sian Hughes, Paediatrician and one of the doctors working for 4 days after the tsunami, setting up an emergency clinic at the Rock House has been focussing on this hospital and has already set up a coronary care unit.

Friends of Unawatuna had a seperate request from Dr. K.B. Galketiya, consultant surgeon at Karapitaya,  for some endoscopy and laparoscopy equipment and, as Sian was due to go back to Sri Lanka, was good enough to check up on the needs and ensure this equipment was purchased, if necessary. Sian and her husband, Tony, duly purchased what was required and with the remaining money were able to buy a TV for the neo-natal ward and a TV and video in the paediatric ward to alleviate some of the boredom suffered by the patients.
